With election day just a few days away, I would like to turn your attention to a very important matter. As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, relationships whether they be within marriage or without are at the forefront of my focus. The main crux of my day to day work is to help individuals, couples, families, etc.. develop effective, more cohesive relationships in order to lead more enriched lives. It is my opinion that relationships are at the core of our growth both personally and in the world. It is also my opinion that marriage is a right, and not a privilege. We may not all share the same views in terms of marriage and relationships, BUT it is not our decision to decide who can and cannot get married. We cannot decide the path of others. If as a society, marriage is at the core of families, and families at the core of our lives, a marriage ban suggests that some people are not worthy of living. In this day and age, and especially in this country, this is unfathomable.
I am talking about Proposition 8. By allowing Proposition 8 to pass we are effectively disallowing Gay and Lesbian couples the right to marry. It is 2008, and it seems like we are going backwards as we are still fighting a civil rights battle in this country, when it comes to homosexuality. It is 2008. This year we had a woman and a black man run for president, yet for some reason we are still questioning whether or not to allow same-sex marriages. This is discrimination. What happened to equal rights for all?
Regardless of political and religious affiliation, discrimination is not something we should tolerate. I strongly urge you this election day to consider voting NO on Proposition 8. As long as we allow homophobia to persist ~in the form of taking away people's rights to living a enriched life of their CHOICE~ then we allow sexism and racism to also persist. Let's please move forward, not backwards.
