Rock 'N Roll Therapy acknowledges that music is relaxing, soothing and most of all healing. Listening to music helps calm the nerves. Studies have shown that live music stimulation has been shown to provide significant benefits to preterm infants. There has also been evidence that music is beneficial for depression as well.
Rock and Roll Therapy is an expressive approach to therapy involving the use of Music. It may also include art, movement, and song & poetry writing to illicit a cathartic release. Rock 'N Roll Therapy does not involve the traditional couch in a traditional therapy office (although this may be a part of it if you choose) but mostly takes place in a music studio with traditional rock and roll instruments (guitars, drums, keyboards, vocals, etc..), where music is the primary therapeutic tool. Using music to establish a trusting relationship, rock and roll therapy then works to improve the client's physical and mental functioning through carefully structured activities. Examples can include singing, listening, playing instruments, composition, moving to music, and music and imagery exercises. Loud noise and/or beautiful music can be made. Rock 'N Roll Therapy utilizes an extensive array of music activities and interventions. For example, the therapist and client might compose songs for the purpose of expression of feelings; one client might learn to play the piano for the purpose of improving fine motor skills, while another client might use instruments to improvise unspoken emotions. Therapy may also use music and movement activities, singing, lyric discussion or music and imagery to help the client reach their goals. The benefits of Rock 'N Roll Therapy are two-fold. Rock 'N Roll therapy will work towards 1) alleviating stress and pain, mostly helping individuals on their journey of self-growth and understanding through the avenue of music but also towards other goals such as improving communication skills, decreasing inappropriate behavior, improving academic and motor skills, increasing attention span, strengthening social and leisure skills, and, 2) the development of musical skills during the process, which may seem to be the secondary benefit of Rock 'N Roll Therapy, but musical acquisition is actually the basis of the healing process.
Join a rock n' roll therapy group, or come alone for an individual session, or bring a friend, or family member if you want. Have a musical instrument of choice? You can bring it. Have no musical background what-so-ever? It does not matter. You may want to write songs, or poetry, or just listen to your favorite songs and artists. Sing along, play along or just listen. You are free to express however you please in your creative process, your creative space.
